Rapid Art Movement first took place in 2020. It returns in 2025 in a whole new way. Read on below for information on the inaugural event or click here to see the event’s photos by Veronica Leigh.

Overview

Focused on inspiring new work from local artists, Rapid Art Movement was a challenge create pieces that could be displayed and performed on the move. Unlike traditional festivals which give rise to crowds as people flock to specific sites, RAM had no fixed locations. Instead it took place in a geographic zone of ever-shifting activity within Grand Rapids’ Monroe North neighborhood.

A musical performances took place on one street corner, then moved to another. Artworks passed by attendees attached to a bicycle or a drag queen. Ballet dancers constantly shifted performance locations. RAM asked how can art could be attached to the body, put on wheels, or performed while in motion. It was event that showed Grand Rapids that when given the chance, our artists can create unforgettable experiences.

Impact

RAM aims to give local artists the increasingly rare chance to show their work and be paid for it. Arts events are creative catalysts which spark new relationships and collaborations among artists. The attendees of the event will witness creativity up close, thus forming new relationships with artists and renewed interest in local artistic production. Lastly, Monroe North business will benefit from increased traffic, whether carry-out or eat-in, after a particularly difficult lock down.
